Residential Weekend November 2009

In November 2009 The Saviour Trust organised its first residential weekend. 7 service users and 3 member of staff travelled to Carleton Lodge Outdoor Centre near Thirsk, North Yorkshire. The weekend was funded by The Targeted Support fund. a £15.5 million government scheme providing grant funding to small and medium providers in communities.

During the weekend the attendees took part in a variety of activities including walking, kayaking, raft building, caving, archery, rock climbing and abseiling.
It proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable weekend, which helped to build stronger relationships between the staff and service users through deeper conversations and shared experiences. The activities and experiences encouraged service users to reflect on their lives, to try new things, to push their boundaries and comfort zones and to see things through to the end, even when faced with a task which was testing and/or not particularly enjoyable for them
"The weekend has given me a more positive outlook"
"Even though I didn’t enjoy caving at the time, I am glad I faced my fears and proved to myself that I could do it"
The staff of Carelton Lodge also commmented on our group, saying they were a pleasure to work with and noting how friendly and polite all service users were.

The work continues after returning to Pontefract in follow up work, to build on the relationships gained, the conversations held and the reflections felt in order to turn these in to postive and continuing actions in the ‘real world’. We hope to arrange more residential weekends in the future
